Training Mornings for Beginners

For first time paddlers, and those new to the sport, we use Exmouth, Teignmouth, and Exeter for our courses. We also use a selection of estuaries, bays and rivers for training, depending on the weather and numbers. Your Paddle UK qualified coach will keep you safe while teaching you the basics and once he is happy with the group we go for a short paddle where we can explore the area, before a relaxed paddle back and a chance to practice your new strokes.

We recommend two mornings, practising your new skills and developing them whilst incorporating a trip along the way. An assessment is then made with a view to a move on to our beginner paddlers group, with day trips specifically designed for this level. Other trips can be planned to cover your new level of paddling experience while of course exploring Devon by kayak and having fun just chilling out in the wonderful natural surroundings.

As you progress with your coach, we can award the following Paddle UK Certificates - Paddle Start Award, Paddle Discovery Award and Paddle Explore Award.

Please note that in the winter Rescue Practice is carried out in an indoor pool.

Wet session
At some point, earlier in the beginners session. a “capsize" practice is needed to know how to get back in your kayak in deep water - we help you back in your kayak with a simple procedure that’s over in second, all very easy. Rescue Practice sessions can be arranged at the indoor pool in Exmouth.

Once you have done all the above, would like to continue your journey with us and have completed some beginner trips, you can then join our experienced / intermediate Associated Group, and meet the rest of the Devon Kayaks team of happy paddlers - some of whom have paddled with me for a number of years. Some have moved on to buying all their  own kit and kayaks, meeting us at different locations - being completely independent but still paddling as a friendly group under the safety of Devon Kayaks leadership, at a reduced cost of £25.

Devon Kayaks  is a friendly group and our goal is to explore deep into our stunning coast line, giving you an opportunity to explore hidden gems, in a safe and controlled environment All in all a very memorable experience.
